On the train in New Mexico April 28, 1917 Dear Folks,   Well as the day is about all over will try & write a few lines & explain the trip. We left Fort Logan last nite at dark & rode all nite, woke up just as we were going into Trinidad, Colo. It sure some town, It is surrounded by mountains. & then from Trinidad we followed along the mountains. It sure was some trip.
Stop at La Vegas New Mexico. It sure was some town too. Green lawns & flowers in bloom, but lots of Mexicans.
Our next stop was Lamy, New M. It was about the same as the other towns.   Then we stop at Albuquque N. M. It sure was a grand town. Sure seen lots of Indians & Mexicans in that town. Saw lots of sheep, goats, & burros along the way. But mostly sand & cactus & every-green trees by the thousands.   There sure is a happy bunch on this train, all soldiers & about 250 & 18 of them are from Coleridge so you see we are together yet.   Well we are stop on the road now. I don't how long as a car run off the track, but it won't be long as the have been working on it for about 5 hours before we came. So we won't get to San Francisco about Monday nite or Tues Morning.   Well hows every body back there. Hope they are all fine, we sure are here have all our clothes. One suit for winter, Two for summer, 6 under suits, 2 pairs of shoes, 6 pairs of socks, 2 shirts, 1 hat, knapsack, 1 knife, 1 fork, 1 spoon, 1 dish, 1 cup, & one thing to pack our extra clothes in. Pat Flynn & I sent our clothes together to Dad. They will come C.O.D. as that is the only way we could send them. So you folks send me the bill so Pat can pay his share too.   Well the Army life so far is good. The eats are not the best but they taste awfully good. We have corn, beef, beans, bread, coffee, sugar, butter, tomatoes, so you see that ain't so bad.   We sure have some Sergant. I work with him all day yesterday loading eats and he sure is a happy guy. Of course there is a lot of wise guys on here but they get their needing at the Fort. Of course the General is along too & we have to salute him but that isn't hard. Back at La Vegas a bunch of guys got off & went up to the saloon & he lock them up in the baggage car.   Well supper is ready so I'll have to quit. Will write when I get out there so Bye Bye.
With lots of Love & regards,
