Letter dated May 11 1917 Page 2

Just back from drill, sure learned a lot this afternoon. Learnt how to attack a fellow with a bayonet, sure makes a fellow feel tired.

We have to do our own washing, have to buy our own towels, soap, polish & combs ourself. We don't even get anything furnished us but our clothes, so you see we needed that little old $10 raise Ha ha.

Lots of the fellows here smoke nothing but cigarettes, but I have still got Ernie's Brother pipe & I smoke that most of the time.

I don't suppose you folks will be able to read this as I have to write this on the cot.

Oh yes, I saw about 20 submarines on the bay this afternoon & one airship but wasn't close to any of them, & also heard them practicing with the big guns. I would like to describe the Coast Defense but I understand we are not allowed to.

Dad, you tell Col. Dennis that we don't have any of the gray back BODY LICE in our camp & I pity the guy that had them.

Well I'll have to close & get ready for tomorrow. I have to wash my leggings, shave, brush my clothes & polish my shoes. So you see I have to look nice. O yes, I bo't me a safety razor & shaving stick, it sure is a peach & I am some barber too, We have a little store here at camp, they call it the Canteen & we can buy most anything we need.

Well folks keep the good work going & Dad keep up on the Euchre playing, because I'll take you on when I get back. And Mother keep my rose bush growing because I want a nice bouquet to wear too. Well Bye Bye. With Lots of love & best regards to all

Your own son,
Kinley
