Dear Father & Mother,

      As there was nothing doing here tonite tho't I would drop a few lines. I don't feel much older today than I did last year, but lot wiser.

      The cake sure was fine. It was the best cake I ever ate in my life, was just as soft & moist as could be. I divided it with the Coleridge kids. They sure enjoyed it fine.

      It made me think of home, but of course that's natural for there is never a day passes but what I think of you folks. For getting homesick none of that for me. I am here to do my duty & I sure will do it.

      The rest of the Coleridge boys are just like brothers & we sure stick together.

      I sent you folks a card last nite. How much was the charges on the clothes? Pat wanted to know.

      One of the Non-Commissioned Officers told us today that we wouldn't be sent away from here for the first of July, but of course we do not know for sure.

      How do the fellows or people feel about the war back there? Has any of the boys joined since we left?

      I also got the stamps sure glad to get them as stamps sure go fast here, I write about 4 letters every nite. Herb hasn't been down yet or I haven't heard from him but I suppose I will later on.

      Have you folks got your car fixed up yet? They sure run them here, all kinds & descriptions. The pavements sure are grand.

      Somebody else has a birthday pretty soon. Look close for the mail after that because the Private might do something Ha Ha. But of course it never can be as good as cake, but of course it will mean a lot from me.

      Has the boys sold my colt yet? They had better sell when the price is good as I need the money. It cost me $1.50 a month for my washing but they sure do a good job. There's about 2 suits of under clothes, 3 pairs socks, 1 shirt, 1 towel, 1 sheet a wk. So you can see the rates are cheap, and everything is ironed.

      Well how is everybody back there? In San Francisco, they are all afraid of being drafted, but doesn't do them any good. I suppose Earl Grant will have to go. He sure will get the worst of it when he gets in as they sure put him or the drafted guys thru hard.
