Letter dated August 5, 1917
Fort Miley Cal
Aug 5, 1917

Dear Folks,

I will try and ans ANSWER your letter I received yesterday. This leaves me feeling fine & dandy hope it finds you folks the same.

We are still at Miley but don't think we will be here long. The Militia are supposed to be here next week. We don't know where we will be sent, but I think it will either be to Washington or to one of the Southern forts.

I sure would like to go down & clean up on them yellow damn slackers in Okla. But I don't suppose they would give us that much pleasure. But believe me they sure got a beating coming. But they are not all slackers from there as we have about 20 of the Okla. Boys in our company. That's in the 1st & 2nd Co.

Talk about trouble, they sure do have it down in Frisco. SAN FRANCISCO Plenty of scraps. One last nite between a soldier & a slacker & believe me the soldier sure did walk through. He ought to be a gentleman, & they arrested the slacker but not the soldier so you see us USS boys have quite a lot of privilege. But of course we have to be Gentlemens.

I suppose you folks are all through harvesting by this time & thinking of stacking. I sure do wish I could be there & help stack. I don't see how Joe will get along without Sid BROTHER & I to torment him Ha, Ha.

But just the same we were having the best times then. And the worst of it was we didn't even know it.

How does the oat crops look? By the way the Okla. Boys talk every thing is burnt up but old Neb will come through the rye with the goodies this year.

I would like awfully to be there & help take that dinner out in the big car. Believe me I sure am glad you got that one as no one deserves the pleasure you folks do.

What did old John Janssen think about his boy being drafted? I see one of the Frerichs boys was drafted. The more German boys the better.

Ed Gartner is here now in my tent reading one of my letters. Believe me he sure is a dandy kid & a true friend a fellow ever had. Whenever he gets anything from home he always divides with me & even if I wanted money I could get his last dollar.

Well we were paid day before yesterday & I went on guard the same day & that night they sure did come in soused. Some of them couldn't hardly get through the gate.

We have something to watch for now as there is a spy hanging arround the forts. I would like to get at him. I wouldn't give him a chance to stop but I would stop him with a bullet. That is the way we stop them out here.

I don't think Wellington Meyers will be able to pass the physical exam. I'll bet he would make a good soldier, but they sure would balled him out. A fellow has to catch on quick or he's out of lick & U know Wellington.

You must bake every time you write me. I wish I could be there & eat that good old warm bread & butter.

I see by the papers that the heat is getting a quite a number of people out east. We are not bother much with the heat, but these heavy fogs are so darn salty it nearly blinds a fellow. I couldn't hardly see the day I came off guard.

Well I suppose you will get my photos by this time. I will have another one taken this week, but I have something better I am sending you & Dad. So keep a look out.

Well I must close now. Write soon.

From your own son, With lots of love to all
Kinley to all
