Letter dated September 20, 1917
Fort Miley Cal
Sept 20 1917
Dear Folks,

I received your letter & money yesterday. Sure was glad to get both.

Well how is every one of you? I am fine & dandy and like this place better every day & the drill is nothing at all to a fellow now.

We expect to be in a big parade tomorrow down through the main part of the city. It is for drafted boys. They sure are giving the boys a good send off out here, even hold them higher than us volunteers. But it don't hurt our feelings because we have plenty of liberty.

Oh, I read in one of the Frisco SAN FRANCISCO papers yesterday where a Cora Hintz of Hartington was shot & killed near her school house. Was that Jack Hintz's girl, & who do they think killed her, if it was her? Us boys have our opinion & you probable know the rest.

Say them last pictures I sent you, you divide among the kids as I had the big one taken for you folks last nite & will send it as soon as it if finish. He said it would be done tomorrow.

Did Ernie BROTHER get his teeth fix up? I am going to Fort Scott sometime soon to get mine fix. It doesn't cost us anything & the dentist is one of the best along the coast. Of course they don't use gold, but silver is good enough for me.

There was some people here today from Allen, Nebr to see Harold & Glenn Wellington, but I didn't get to meet them.

I sure was glad to hear Aunt Sarah is better. I got a letter from Bessie Surface and she said Pearl Berger wrote he would soon be home. Pretty good sign of peace, Hun? I don't see how Pearl could send so much money home. It is winning it in gambling, because our company bills such as wash, shoemaker & tailor, barber bills eat quite a hole in our $30. But you can just bet the old dice games don't get any of mine.

Mother, I am glad you like the Red Cross. I always knew when it came to doing their bit my little Mother & Daddie would be at the top of the list & it puts more pep in a fellow.

A lot of the boys miss calls. But so far I have not miss one without permission & I am not going to if I can help it. I want my discharge to be as clean as anyone & if anything a little cleaner.

Say but your sure must be just everlastingly hit with the neidles I HAVE NO IDEA (?) & fruit this fall.

You tell Ernie I am awfully glad to get the 20 but don't dare send any more as I am going to try & send some back. But don't know how much or how often.

Well news is scarce, so will close.

With Love to all
Your son
Kinley
